LUDHIANA: From a homemaker to a successful commercial director of a firm, it has been a 'gainful' journey for Rajinder Kaur, 45, a resident of BRS Nagar.
In the eight years as GS Radiators' commercial director, she has not only brought about some significant changes in the firm, but has also multiplied its annual turnover.
Rajinder, a graduate, said, ''I had never worked earlier.
I joined my father-in-law Giani Bhagat Singh's company, GS Radiators, in 2003, after his demise. I took the decision after I found my husband overburdened with work. He was managing everything alone and it was difficult without his father.''
The annual turnover of the company was Rs 18 crore when she joined it, and at present, it has crossed the Rs 45 crore mark. ''Earlier, I would visit the company to supervise the gardening work. I loved its garden and spending time there. But after joining it, I played an active role in managing its commercial affairs.''
Her decision to help her husband had earned the entire family's support. And its confidence in her grew after the turnover of the company increased to Rs 33 crores in 2008. Thereafter, they started a new unit too.
Ranjodh Singh, her husband, said, ''I knew my wife was capable, but had never thought that she would manage our units efficiently. Though it was a different path, she covered it successfully.''
Her daughter, Avneet Kaur, 22, said, ''I am proud of my mother. Instead of going to kitty parties, she utilises her time well and brings profit to the company. She balances her personal and professional life efficiently... she is my ideal.'' Her son, Jaskaran Singh, 15, said, ''Though my mother spends most of her time in the company, her family never suffers. Like her work, we too get her adequate attention.''

Sharing workload
''I married Ranjodh Singh, a businessman, in 1989. I was a homemaker till 2003, when I joined my father-in-law's firm. The increasing workload on my husband made me take the decision.''
Profits jump
When she joined the company, its annual turnover was Rs 18 crore. In 2008, it increased to 33 crore. At present, it is Rs 45 crore.
Tricks of her trade
''When I joined the company, neither the workers nor the administration knew the value of time and skills. I organized various seminars to apprise the staff of ways to increase the firm's productivity. Many orientation programmes and regular employee interactions were also held. Taking the next step, we went for aggressive marketing to increase the turnover,'' Rajinder said.
